The Friends is a tax-exempt (501(c)3) membership organization made up of people who share interests in and concerns about wildlife, the outdoors, and education.
What are the goals of the Friends?
How do the Friends support the Refuge and Research Center?
The Friends raise funds
for the educational programs, exhibits, and outreach opportunities undertaken by the Refuge and for research conducted by the Wildlife Research Center focusing on
endangered species, environmental contaminants, loss of habitat, migratory birds, and many other topics vital to the well being of wildlife throughout this country.

How do the Friends raise funds?
In addition to membership dues, the Friends operate the Wildlife Images bookstore located in the lobby of the National Wildlife Visitor Center and the very popular Wildlife Conservation Interpretive Tram tour on the Refuge. Fundraising events are held throughout the year, most notably, the annual Patuxent Wildlife Art Show and Sale in the Spring. The Friends also seek and administer research grants from concerned foundations, organizations and individual donors. All contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Does the Friends Organization pay fundraisers? NO! The only salaries paid by the Friends are to bookstore personnel and to tram drivers.
